Here at FreeCheckFix we try to Imagine trying to juggle. Juggling two balls is okay, maybe three. But what if someone keeps throwing you more balls? Five, ten, twenty balls! You’d drop them all and everything would stop, right?

Your computer is like a juggler. It runs different programs, which are like the balls. If too many programs are running at the same time, even ones you can’t see, your computer gets overwhelmed and slows right down.

On most computers (the ones that use Windows), you can press three special keys together: Ctrl (Control), Alt (Alternate), and Delete. A menu will pop up. Choose “Task Manager.”

What to Look For: Task Manager shows you all the programs running, like a list of all the balls being juggled. If you see lots of things running that you don’t recognize, or if something is using up a lot of the computer’s thinking power (it often shows this with percentages), that might be the problem! Don’t close things unless you are sure you know what you are closing, but just seeing this list helps us investigate.

Check #2: Is A Backpack Totally Full? (Checking Storage Space)

Think about a backpack. If you stuff it completely full of books, snacks, and your supplies, you can’t fit anything else in, right? It’s hard to find things, and it’s heavy!

Your computer has a storage space, like a backpack, called a hard drive. This is where it keeps all your games, pictures, videos, and work. If this space gets too full, the computer doesn’t have room to move things around or save temporary files it needs to think properly. It’s like trying to do your work on a desk completely covered in stuff!

How to Check (Easy peasy!): Click on the little folder icon usually at the bottom of your screen (it’s called File Explorer). On the left side, find “This PC.” Click on it. You’ll see your main storage drive, usually called “Windows (C:)”. It often has a little bar showing how full it is. If that bar is mostly red or says there’s very little space left, your computer’s “backpack” is too full!

What to Look For: A drive that is almost full (often shown in red).

Check #3: Does It Have Computer Germs? (Checking for Viruses/Malware)

You know how when you get sick with germs, you feel tired and slow? Computers can get “sick” too! There are bad programs called viruses or malware (think of them as computer germs) that can sneak onto your computer from the internet or sometimes even from a USB stick.

These nasty programs can slow your computer down because they are secretly using its energy to do bad things, like trying to steal information or spread to other computers.

How to Check (Super Important!): Most Windows computers have a built-in doctor called “Windows Security” or “Windows Defender.” Ask a FreeCheckFix Technician to help you find it (you can usually type “Security” into the search bar near the Start button). Once you open it, look for an option like “Virus & threat protection” and then click a button that says “Quick Scan.”

What to Look For: Let the scan run. It’s like the computer doctor checking for germs. If it finds any “Germs” (Viruses or Malware), it will tell you. A FreeCheckFix Technician needs to help decide what to do next if it finds something!

Check #4: Does It Need Its Computer Vitamins? (Checking for Updates)

These updates are like vitamins and check-ups for your computer. They fix problems, patch up security holes so those computer germs can’t get in as easily, and sometimes even make things run faster. If your computer hasn’t had its updates in a while, it might be running slowly or be less safe.

How to Check (Ask for help!): Click the Start button (usually the Windows logo in the corner), then click the little gear icon for “Settings.” Inside Settings, look for “Update & Security.” Click that, and then click “Windows Update.”

What to Look For: It will tell you if updates are available or if you are up to date. If it says “Updates available,” ask a FreeCheckTechnician to help you download and install them. This can sometimes take a while! Bring it into our shop located on 1817 W. Anderson Ln. in Austin TX.

Check #5: Are Too Many Programs Trying to Wake Up at Once? (Checking Startup Programs)

Imagine if every single one of your electronics automatically turned on the second you woke up in the morning! Your room would be noisy, and their batteries would run down fast, even before you played with them.

Some computer programs try to do this! They set themselves up to start automatically every single time you turn your computer on. Even if you don’t need them right away, they start running in the background, using up the computer’s energy (like draining batteries).

How to Check: Go back to the Task Manager (remember? Ctrl+Alt+Delete). At the top of the Task Manager window, look for a tab that says “Startup.” Click it.

What to Look For: This list shows programs that start when your computer starts. Look at the list with a FreeCheckFix Technician. If there are lots of programs you don’t need right away (especially ones that say “High impact”), a FreeCheckFix Tech might be able to safely disable them from starting automatically. This can make your computer start up much faster! Definitely don’t disable anything without asking a FreeCheckFix Technician!
